Hello there! I suppose you want to run a marathon and wondering what is it going to be like i.e. the training, what kind of gear you are going to need and I suppose the biggest question of all is ..can you make it to the finish line?
Well, I am telling you, as a 44 year old, who just picked up the sport last year (2008) and run a few marathons, ... you can make it to the finish line. The only question is, in what shape will you finish ha3x.
Running a marathon is certainly not easy but it is very doable. Lots of people have done it. Famous people, not so famous people, people who are previously not fit (like me), disabled people, cancer survivor etc. have done it. During my last 42k run, I saw a guy running with prosthetic leg / blade. I also saw a midget running ..the guy actually overtook me at around 30k lol. So you see..all kind of people have run and finished their marathon.
In theory, what you gonna need is simple too. For me there are only three things needed ..desire, a training program and discipline.
Whatever your reason for running is, ..eg health, charity, bet with your friend etc ..you want to be wanting to run the marathon.
You also need a proper training program, you can't be running aimlessly otherwise you could hurt yourself. This part is easy because the Internet is full of marathon training program that you can follow.
The third one is the discipline to follow the training program. Probably this is going to be most difficult especially if you have to juggle time. It's going to mean some sacrifice too .. I know of people who wake up very early during their weekend (even earlier than during work day) just so they can do their long run. Actually.. I am in that group of people, but please don't tell my boss that.
But most important above all is you gotta listen to your body. You have to be careful that you don't overdo your training and get injured. Look .., if you are not running for the prize..marathon is really a race against yourself. All the training program will tell you that it is better to undertrain than to overtrain.
Alright ..I think that's all for my first entry. See you guys soon .. if you are a marathon beginner and looking for tips on what NOT to do, please come back again. Or if you are a sub 3-hr or sub 4-hr runner you are also welcome for a good laugh.
